Premium Protection for High-Horsepower Ford Mustangs

AMSOIL adds 5W-50 viscosity to its Signature Series line.

Combining sports styling and muscle with options that appeal to the mass market, the Ford Mustang is widely considered an American classic. Introduced at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 and buoyed by network advertising and appearances as the 1964 Indianapolis 500 pace car and in the 1964 James Bond film, “Goldfinger,” the high-performance car quickly grabbed the attention of motorists everywhere and shattered sales records. The Mustang celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, and it continues to maintain its popularity and appeal.

Much like the iconic Ford Mustang, AMSOIL is an American original and performance leader. AMSOIL set all-new standards for motor oil quality and performance when it introduced the world’s first synthetic motor oil to meet American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements in 1972, and it continues to produce the top-performing lubricants available on the market.

New Signature Series 5W-50

AMSOIL has expanded the Signature Series line to include a robust 5W-50 synthetic motor oil formulated specifically for high-horsepower Ford Mustang engines. How to Become an AMSOIL Dealer

When Lt. Col. Albert J. Amatuzio developed the world’s first API-qualified synthetic motor oil, in 1972, it was a major achievement in the history of automotive lubrication. Two decades later Hart’s Lubricants World acknowledged this milestone by appointing him to the industry’s Hall of Fame. Developing the first synthetic motor oil and bringing it to market, however, were two very different challenges. The first was a matter of chemistry. The second involved psychology, marketing, and determination.

When AMSOIL was introduced at $3.60 per quart, conventional oils were selling at about $0.40 per quart. Oil was a loss-leader, so it was practically given away. Frugal Scotsman that I am, I generally purchased oil for $6.00 per case with a $6.00 mail-in rebate. In short, I bought my oil with a $0.32 stamp – much less than $3.60 per quart. I never thought about brand at all. Until I learned about AMSOIL I used to think oil was just oil. I never knew anyone who thought about it any other way.

When Al Amatuzio persuaded some local stores in Duluth, Minn., to stock AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil, it was near $5.00 a can. It didn’t just fly out the door. It was 10X more expensive, but people didn’t know what it was. Yet, the benefits were so significant – 25,000-mile/one-year oil change, superior low-temperature protection for the coldest Minnesota winter days – that Al was able to sell the product out of the back of his car with ease. Face-to-face, when he made the case for his product’s benefits, he was able to move quite a bit of it. He enjoyed selling himself, but he was also packaging and distributing and it soon became clear that there was only so much one man could do.

Eventually, a friend named Shirley Green encouraged him to sell the product by means of a network of independent Dealers, and in 1973 Al discovered that there really was a future for his fledgling oil business. Mobil Oil Corp. noticed as well and, within a couple years, Mobil 1 was introduced, legitimizing the new product category he had created. Because people did not know how significant the performance difference was, but they did see the price tags, truly widespread acceptance was still a long time coming. AMSOIL was a product ahead of its time. As pressure mounted to make cars more environmentally friendly and less wasteful, engines became more sophisticated and lubricant performance demands also became more stringent. Eventually, in the 1990s, nearly every oil company began to carry synthetic motor oil. Because conventional petroleum oils cost more in order to meet increasingly strict CAFE requirements, the price differential ceased to be the major gulf it had once been. Instead of a major leap, synthetic oil become became just a step up.

I mention all this to help you understand how the company came to embrace the alternative marketing model it chose. The AMSOIL Dealers who built our company exemplify many of the qualities that built America: independence, self-reliance, a strong work ethic, loyalty and an entrepreneurial spirit. We’re proud of our Dealers and committed to their success.

Anyone can choose to become a Dealer, though being an AMSOIL Dealer is not for everyone. Benefits include being able to purchase AMSOIL products at the lowest possible prices, running your own business and no inventory requirements. Not everyone who wants to run AMSOIL in their car is aiming to build a small business. Some people simply love the benefits of our products and desire to purchase them at wholesale prices. For these folks, we developed a Preferred Customer program that enables them to purchase products at a reduced cost while earning eligibility for special offers and promotions.

In 1984 I became a Dealer, in part because I was a believer in AMSOIL synthetic lubricants and the benefits I saw. In addition, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to supplement my income. At that time a Dealer signed me up and I had to fill out some paperwork, which I mailed to the company. Today you can sign up the same way through any Dealer and fill out the same signup form I used, though now they have also added a line for your email address. You can also sign up here in the AMSOIL Online Store.

As I learned, running an AMSOIL Dealership is not a get-rich-quick scheme – it takes dedication and hard work. But, if you’re interested in being your own boss and making some extra money, give it some thought.

AMSOIL Z-ROD® Synthetic Motor Oil

Z-ROD® Keeps Classic Vehicles Street-Ready

Making the transition from storage to the street can be an anxious time for classic car owners. Even after extensive preparations, doubts may linger whether a prized vehicle has been effectively protected during a period of inactivity. Many owners now look to modern technology to keep vintage hot rods and muscle cars performing at a high level on the street and fully protected during storage.

Protecting engines designed decades ago- and engines modified for increased performance- can be challenging. From flat-tappet cams and splash-lubricated components to the toll of periodic storage, unique issues must be addressed.

Flat-Tappet Cams and ZDDP

The design of flat-tappet cams makes them especially vulnerable to wear. As the name indicates, the tappet- or lifter – is flat. During operation the surface of the cam lobe slides rapidly over the surface of the tappet, producing high friction and temperatures. The camshaft and lifters are responsible for triggering the precisely tuned movements of the valve train. Here, the use of anti-wear additives becomes crucial.

Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) is a commonly used motor oil additive that provides anti-wear protection and minimizes lubricant breakdown. ZDDP also exhibits mild extreme-pressure protection. As temperatures in an engine rise, ZDDP decomposes, and the resulting chemistry protects critical metal surfaces.

Without the protective film barrier provided by ZDDP, the cams and lifters wear from the force of operation, negatively affecting cam and valve operation. Because most V-8 engines of the muscle car era came standard with flat-tappet cams, the problem is prevalent to classic-car and hot rod owners.

In these applications, modern oils, such as AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, are capable of providing adequate wear protection after the engine has been broken in. But due to variables like severity of service and level of modification, AMSOIL primarily recommends high-ZDDP oils in these applications, such as Z-ROD® Synthetic Motor Oil. When breaking in a rebuilt or high-performance engine, AMSOIL recommends AMSOIL Break-In Oil, which contains high levels of ZDDP for added protection.

Rust and Corrosion

Moisture can be as devastating an engine contaminant as dirt or sludge. Vehicles subjected to long-term storage are especially vulnerable to humidity-driven rust and corrosion. AMSOIL Z-ROD® Synthetic Motor Oil is formulated with a unique blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors to ensure maximum protection during storage.

AMSOIL Z-ROD® Synthetic Motor Oil (ZRTZRF)

  • Protects flat-tappet cams
  • Long-term rust and corrosion protection

AMSOIL Break-In Oil (BRK)

  • Quickly seats rings
  • Protects vital parts from wear
  • Increased film strength

Can Your Motorcycle Survive Heat this Extreme?

Motorcycle Survive Heat this Extreme

V-Twins Get Hot

Harley-Davidsons* and other bikes with big V-twin engines generate significant heat, especially in low-speed parades, in rally traffic or on long climbs on hot days. Motor oil plays a critical role in cooling these big air-cooled engines, and even more so in low-speed operation with limited wind generated to cool the bike. If the oil can’t withstand the heat, its ability to protect your bike is compromised.

Is your motorcycle protected against extreme heat?

Watch what happens when we push a 2012 Harley Davidson FXDB to 500ºF in our mechanical lab to see how AMSOIL synthetic lubricants protect against extreme heat.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil Protects in Extreme Heat

To demonstrate its extreme-heat protection qualities, AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil was subjected to a dynamometer test designed to simulate conditions even more extreme than the demanding stop-and-go driving conditions of a motorcycle rally or parade route.

A 2012 Harley-Davidson FXDB Dyna Street Bob* motorcycle equipped with AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil was subjected to a strenuous low-speed test cycle, with significant idle time broken by short bursts of engine revving and little to no air moving across the cylinders. Like most Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the Dyna Street Bob features an air-cooled V-twin engine, which relies on cooling

fins arrayed along the cylinder walls to conduct heat away. To create the most-severe operating conditions possible, the electronic temperature controls, which safeguard the motorcycle when temperatures reach dangerous levels, were deactivated. The combination of low airflow and inoperative temperature controls allowed the test lab to subject the oil and engine components to intense heat not normally experienced in the real world. Cylinder temperatures reached more than 500°F, and oil temperatures exceeded 300°F – temperatures well into the range where oils begin to break down and often lead to catastrophic failure.

500°F is No Problem

The extreme temperatures were no match for AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil. After nearly 70 minutes of torturous testing and heat exposure, oil analysis revealed no change in oil viscosity and only minor levels of oxidation, TBN depletion and wear.

Dyno Test Results

Not only did AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil prevent the engine from overheating and seizing

during the extreme dyno test, it did so without losing chemical integrity or ability to protect vulnerable engine components. See full results here. Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil provides outstanding protection in even the most compromising and severe high-temperature riding and idling conditions, providing peace of mind that your air-cooled V-twin is protected even in low speeds on hot days.

AMSOIL formulates a full line of products for V-twins, including AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Transmission Fluid and AMSOIL Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid.

Your bike should never get this hot. If it does, AMSOIL has you covered.
