COMPATIBILITY
AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is compatible with other conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil’s life expectancy and reduce its performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.

Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils.

SERVICE LIFE

  • Normal Service – Up to 25,000 miles, 700 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first, in personal vehicles not operating under Severe Service.
  • Severe Service – Up to 15,000 miles, 700 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first.

Severe Service: Primarily short trips (less than 10 miles [16 km]); turbo/supercharged engines; commercial or fleet vehicles; excessive idling; first-time use of AMSOIL motor oil in a vehicle with more than 100,000 miles; frequent towing, hauling, plowing or driving in dusty conditions.

Untreated Fuel Leads to Poor Engine Performance
A vehicle demonstrates its best efficiency and engine performance when it is new. As the engine ages, its performance suffers from gasoline fuel-generated deposits that form on the fuel injectors, intake valves and combustion chamber. Additives are required to control deposit formation.

Today’s fuels, however, lack sufficient treatments of either enough additives or high quality additives. Fuel system deposits result in the following:

  • Lost fuel economy
  • Lost power and poor throttle response
  • Failed emission tests
  • Poor drivability – surging, hesitation, stalling, rough idle
  • Engine knocking (pinging) and rap
  • Difficult starts

Unsurpassed Deposit Clean-up
Port Fuel Injector Deposits form after the engine has been shut down and there is no gasoline flowing through the injectors. During this “hot soak” period the injectors heat up and the gasoline remaining in the injectors degrades and forms deposits. This can happen very quickly with the use of poor quality gasoline and short trip driving. Because the clearances within the injectors are extremely tight and injectors must deliver precise amounts of “atomized” fuel, even small amounts of deposits can cause injectors to malfunction. Fuel flow is reduced and spray patterns are disrupted, decreasing engine efficiency, power and fuel economy, while increasing exhaust emissions.

Intake Valve Deposits form on the intake side or back side of the valves. As deposits increase, they restrict airflow and alter airflow patterns in the cylinder. The deposits disrupt the balanced air/fuel ratio by momentarily absorbing and releasing fuel, and they can cause valve sticking by getting in the way of the valve stem and guide. Deposits also restrict proper seating, and the valves may be burned. Intake valve deposits cause lost engine power, increased emissions, poor engine efficiency and potential valve failure.

Combustion Chamber Deposits form on the top of the pistons and on the cylinder heads. They increase compression and absorb heat during combustion to later release it during the intake cycle. In some engines with tight squish domes, combustion chamber deposits cause the piston to actually hit the cylinder head. This is referred to as combustion chamber deposit interference or “carbon rap.” Combustion chamber deposits also flake off as they get large, and these flakes can get trapped between the valves and valve seat, resulting in compression loss, difficult starting and rough idle.

Higher compression and stored heat cause increased intake fresh charge temperatures and the increased likelihood of pre-ignition “knock” or “pinging” when the fuel spontaneously combusts prior to spark ignition. This increases emissions and may cause engine damage. Many of today’s cars have “knock” sensors that adjust spark timing to prevent knock.

Although audible knock is controlled, power is lost from retarded timing. Higher octane fuels of 4-5 octane numbers can be used to help prevent knock, an effect called “octane requirement increase.”As a vehicle ages, more-expensive,
higher-octane fuel is needed to keep it operating at peak performance. By cleaning combustion chamber deposits, knock is controlled, power is restored, fuel economy increases and higher-octane fuels are less necessary for peak performance.

Recommendations
Treat one full tank of gas up to 20 gallons with one bottle of P.i. For very large gas tanks, partially fill to 40 gallons and treat with two bottles of P.i. Using more than two bottles per treatment is not recommended. Treat gas every 4,000 miles of service (or 100 hours for marine, stationary and off-road gasoline-powered engines). P.i. helps pass emission tests by running one tank of treated fuel through the engine prior to testing. Safe for use with catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, oxygenated gas and 10 percent ethanol blended gas. Not recommended for two-cycle engines.

The 1997 Honda Accord Experiment

How many of you have teenagers?  My 16 year old needed some wheels so we found a still down the road on a 1997 Honda Accord.  Here is the details

1997 Honda Accord / 175,128 / Last oil change “I don’t know”  / transmission replaced 40,000 miles ago.

What we did!

We ran the AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush.  This was the longest 15 minutes of my life.  Down the drain plug went and man was it dirty(will have picture next time).  We replaced the AC Delco filter (which was tighten by impact wrench or a giant) with the AMSOIL EA15K20.  With all locked up tight we poured in some AMSOIL XL 5W30 and fired the best up. Pressure went up and within moments it was running smooth and ready to run.  We took a valve cover temp after a 15 min ride with a range of 201-205.  Of course, I didn’t get the before documented.

What Does Viscosity Mean (and How Does it Affect Your Engine)?

Why does honey flow more slowly than water? Because of the difference in its viscosity.

Viscosity is the measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Water, for example, flows much faster than honey or maple syrup (if you prefer that in your morning coffee) when poured from a container.

That’s because water has a lower viscosity. The lower the viscosity of a fluid, the faster it flows. Of course, the opposite is true. It’s often easier to think of viscosity in the following terms.

  • Thin and light describe fluids with low viscosity
  • Thick and heavy describe fluids with high viscosity

What causes differences in viscosity?
Molecules, honey (get it?)

I think best in visuals, so let’s think of molecules as a group of people in a room. In one group everyone is holding hands very lightly. It’s flu season and they don’t want to get sick. On the other side of the room, everyone is holding hands fairly tightly. It’s a close-knit group, that one.

If you weave through both groups and break through the chains of people, you have an easier time weaving through the first group than the second. This is essentially how molecules are bonded in liquids. The looser the molecular bonds, the weaker the inter-molecular forces. This equates to a lower viscosity. The tighter the molecular bonds, the stronger the inter-molecular forces. This equates to a higher viscosity.

How does viscosity affect engine protection?

So what does this all mean to protecting your engine? Put simply, viscosity is the most important property of a lubricant. How lubricant viscosity reacts to changes in temperature, pressure or speed determines how well the oil protects your vehicle. Lubricants with too low of a viscosity for your engine may cause:

  • Increased metal-to-metal contact
  • Increased friction and wear
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Leaking seals

Lubricants with too high of a viscosity could also hurt your engine by causing:

  • Increased fluid friction
  • Increased operating temperatures
  • Poor cold-temperature starting
  • Reduced energy efficiency

How temperature affects viscosity

When cold, lubricants thicken and flow more slowly and require more energy to circulate. That’s why it may be tougher to start your car on a frigid winter morning – the crankshaft has to churn through cold, thick oil before it spins fast enough for the engine to start. Since the oil flows more slowly, engine components may be vulnerable to wear until the oil warms enough to flow throughout the engine.

The opposite happens when the temperature soars. Say you’re towing a camper down the interstate at the height of summer. The intense heat your engine generates causes the oil to become thinner. If it becomes too thin, it can fail to adequately separate metal components during operation, inviting wear.

The greater a lubricant’s viscosity, the greater pressure or load it can withstand, allowing separation between moving parts to be maintained. But there are limits to this relationship. If the viscosity is too high, it won’t flow as readily and your engine will work harder and burn more fuel.

Different vehicles require different viscosities

The key is to use a lubricant with the correct viscosity for the application. Not only that, but you want to use a lubricant that resists thickening when cold, yet maintains its ability to protect against wear when hot. Synthetic lubricants, such as AMSOIL synthetic lubricants, offer better cold-flow when the temperature drops and improved protection once your engine has reached operating temperature.

Vehicle manufacturers specify in the owner’s manual which viscosity of motor oil you should use. You can always use the AMSOIL Product Guide to find that information, too.
